ACCSSO 2025 Gathers in Wilmington to Advance Campus Safety and Explore the Latest Security Innovations

Day 1: A Warm Welcome and a Focus on the Future

The conference opened Wednesday with remarks from Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo, who welcomed attendees and emphasized the importance of collaboration in building safer communities. The morning continued with the annual ACCSSO business meeting, where members outlined goals for the year and elected officers. Notably, Wyatt Cumbo was re-elected as District 2 Representative.

That evening, attendees went out to dinner together, enjoying a relaxed opportunity to connect, catch up with familiar faces, meet new colleagues, and learn from each other in a casual setting.

Day 2: Sessions, Tech, and Hands-On Experiences

Thursday offered a full slate of educational sessions and networking. Gold partners Katana Safety, True IP Solutions, and Brooks Network Services shared updates on the latest tools and technologies supporting campus safety.

Among the day’s featured sessions:

  • Ted Hendrix led a session on “Lockout/Tagout in Non-Manufacturing Environments”

  • The University of North Carolina–Charlotte Emergency Management Team spoke on developing large event action plans

In the afternoon, attendees toured the USS North Carolina Battleship, gaining a unique perspective on maritime safety operations. During the visit, the group participated in a discussion on slips, trips, and falls, using the ship’s environment to explore common hazards and prevention strategies in complex spaces. The tour concluded with a seafood spread on site, offering attendees a chance to unwind and enjoy the Wilmington waterfront together.

The evening wrapped up with Game Show Champions, a high-energy team competition that gave attendees a fun way to close out the day. Modeled after classic game shows, the event featured fast-paced rounds, plenty of laughs, and a lighthearted atmosphere that brought everyone together for some well-earned fun after a full day of sessions.

Day 3: Celebrating Efforts and Sharing Insights

Friday closed out the event with the EHSI Safety Awards, highlighting individuals and campuses making a strong impact in the field of safety and emergency management.

The final session brought together Ted Hendrix, Laura Crawford, and Jill Warren for a Q&A panel. Their discussion covered common challenges, lessons learned, and practical advice for managing campus safety in real time.

Looking Ahead
Throughout the three days, one thing was clear: safety professionals across North Carolina are committed to learning from one another and growing together. From vendor showcases to peer discussions, the 2025 ACCSSO Conference highlighted the value of connection, innovation, and shared progress.

The momentum continues in Wilmington next year. ACCSSO 2026 will be held April 29 to May 1 at Cape Fear Community College – Union Station. Those interested in presenting are encouraged to contact the planning committee.

ACCSSO honors outstanding contributions to campus safety with the presentation of the EHSI Safety Awards.

ACCSSO celebrates excellence in safety, recognizing Daniel McNeill as Emerging Safety Leader. Regional Safety Awards were presented to Ronnie Gibbs (Western), Damita Reed (Central), and Keith Williams (Eastern). The celebration wrapped up with Ronnie Caulder receiving the well-earned Lifetime Legacy Award.
